Meet Our Professional Staff

Here at the Landings Club, our golf professional staff takes great pride in enhancing each Member's experience with group and private golf lessons. Read below to learn about each professional's experience and honors. Each Club golf professional is suited to assist Members with all golf needs, from instruction and tournaments to finding the perfect golf equipment and clothing in our pro shops. All professionals are available for golf instruction and golf lessons.

Golf Professionals

Tad Sanders, PGA - Director of Golf Operations

A member of The Landings professional staff since 1987, Tad is a graduate of the University of Virginia. A PGA member since 1991, he has served as the Georgia PGA-East Chapter President and on the Board of Directors of the Georgia PGA. In 2001, Tad was selected as the Georgia PGA-East Chapter Golf Professional of the Year. Tad enjoys assisting golfers of all skill levels to improve their games.

Nicole Weller, PGA/LPGA - Head Teaching Professional

Nicole, a member of both the PGA of America and the LPGA Teaching & Club Professional Division, played for and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1994. She then received her Master's Degree in Sport Psychology from The University of Tennessee. As Site Director for LPGA*USGA Girls Golf of Knoxville, Nicole received the 2004 Knoxville Chapter PGA 'Junior Leader' Award. Nicole spent two summers interning in Pinehurst with the CGA and the Pinehurst Resort Junior Golf Schools. Nicole joined the staff at The Landings Club in 2005 alongside her husband Ty Weller. Nicole boasts a laundry list of awards, including Golf Digest's Best Young Teachers Award - Top 40 Under 40; U.S. Kids Master Professional Award; 2011 LPGA Southeast Region Teacher of the Year; and 2013 LPGA and PGA National Junior Golf Leader Awards.

Ellen Jacobs - Tournament Coordinator

Ellen joined The Landings Club team in 2010 as the Golf Course Maintenance Assistant. In that role, Ellen worked to ensure courses were optimal for play and assisted with major outside tournaments. In May 2014, Ellen was promoted to her current role as tournament and tee times coordinator. Now she works with members and committees on tournament preparation and execution.

Mike McNutt, PGA - Head Professional, Marshwood

Mike joined The Landings team following graduation from the Professional Golf Management Program at Ferris State University in 1994. He has worked at all four golf shops and has been active on the lesson tee and in tournament operations. Mike was named Marshwood Head Professional in June 2004.

Brian Sams, PGA - Head Professional, Plantation

Brian, a graduate of Carson-Newman College, entered the golf business in 1991 with KSL Fairways Management Group of Manassas, Virginia. In 1998, he moved to Savannah and worked first at Deer Creek and then Marshwood before moving into the Head Professional position at Oakridge in 2004, then on to Plantation Head Professional in 2006. Brian has a true passion for helping golfers of all levels improve their golf game.

Brad Baumann, PGA - Head Professional, Oakridge
Oakridge Golf Shop | 598-2540 | Brad joined The Landings team from Knoxville, Tennessee, with experience as a Head Golf Professional. He is a certified club fitter with a few years of experience in a "Top 100" retail golf shop. Brad has been at the Oakridge shop since his arrival in 2007. Brad was promoted to the Head Golf Professional position in 2014.

Ty Weller, PGA - Head Professional, Deer Creek

Originally from Topeka, Kansas, Ty graduated and played his collegiate golf at Washburn University and has been a PGA member since 1999. Ty joined The Landings Club in 2004 prior to working for Billy Casper Golf Management. Ty enjoys teaching golf to all ages and playing golf with members.

Golf Maintenance Directors

Chris Steigelman - Director of Golf Course Maintenance South

Chris is a 2004 graduate of Auburn University earning a bachelor's degree in Agronomy and Soil Sciences. During his time at Auburn he worked as a research assistant in the plant breeding department and completed an internship renovating the Willow Point Country Club Golf Course in Alexander City, Ala. He is a 16-year veteran of the golf industry with a background in golf course maintenance as well as golf course construction and renovation. Chris has been with The Landings Club since 2004 and has spent the last six years as the Golf Course Superintendent of Plantation and Palmetto. He is a Class A Member of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America (GCSAA) and has also earned the designation of Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS), the highest recognition given by the GCSAA. He represents one of only 1,600 active, certified superintendents in the country. This certification is a symbol of his knowledge and experience in the industry, as well as his dedication to personal advancement and desire to provide the Club with the best possible playing conditions. Chris has also been involved in the re-certifying of The Landings Club courses as Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Courses and recently received a specialization in Habitat Development and Wildlife Management through the GCSAA's Environmental Management Program. In addition, he serves on the Public Relations Committee of the Georgia Chapter of Golf Course Superintendents.

Tyson Helsel - Director of Golf Course Maintenance North

Tyson graduated from Kansas State University in 2003 with his bachelor's degree in Agronomy and a minor in Business Administration. Tyson completed three turfgrass management internships at Longview Golf Course in Kansas City, Mo., and an internship at Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan, Kan. He then accepted a position at The Landings Club as an Assistant Superintendent at Deer Creek in March 2004. In April 2005, Tyson was promoted to Golf Course Superintendent at Oakridge and then returned to Deer Creek in May 2006 as Golf Course Superintendent. In April 2007, Tyson was promoted to Superintendent of Marshwood and Magnolia and has fulfilled that responsibility since. Tyson is a Class A Member of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America (GCSAA), the Carolinas GCSA, and the Georgia GCSA. Over the years, Tyson has amassed more than 200 hours of continuing education credit, demonstrating his commitment to learning, growth and continuous improvement. He will be recognized by the GCSAA in July with the highest level of certification offered in his profession.

Golf Superintendents

Erik Carson - Superintendent, Oakridge

Erik graduated The Pennsylvania State University in 2007 with concurrent bachelor degrees in Horticulture and Turfgrass Science. While at Penn State, he completed three internships; one at Bartlett Tree Experts in Pittsburgh, PA; one at the ACE Club in Philadelphia, PA; and the third at Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter, FL. Erik joined The Landings Club in late 2007 as a Second Assistant Superintendent at Marshwood course then was promoted to Assistant Superintendent over the Magnolia course in 2008. In late 2009, he moved to Oakridge course as assistant before accepting his current position as Golf Course Superintendent in early 2011. He is currently a Superintendent Member of the GCSAA, Georgia GCSA and the Carolina's GCSA.



Matthew Jones - Superintendent, Deer Creek

Matthew graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Agronomy and Soils. During his time there, he worked for the Auburn University Club and as a research assistant in the agronomy department. He completed two internships in Pinehurst, NC working at The Pinehurst Resort. There Matthew volunteered with the agronomy staff and worked on the restoration project of the number two course where the 2014 Men’s and Women’s U.S. Open was played. After graduation in May 2012, he joined The Landings Club as a second assistant working on both the Marshwood and Magnolia Golf Courses. He was quickly promoted to Assistant Superintendent on Magnolia and then to Senior Assistant Superintendent. At the end of 2015, Matthew moved to Deer Creek as the Superintendent. He is a member of the GCSAA, Georgia GASA, and the Carolina’s GCSA. Matthew is an avid golf enthusiast and is fully committed to continuous growth and development in his field to ensure playability and aesthetics meet the highest standards of The Landings Club.
